Net Locality and Games

For the final blog post of the semester, take some time to address the following question:

In Net Locality, we argue that games can be uniquely suited to reorienting one’s relationship to urban space and social context. How does the literature on games and play relate to the notion of net locality? What are the affordances of game play for creating meaningful places? You can use examples within the book or apply your own examples.

Convergence Culture

Is convergence a useful descriptor of mainstream culture? Jenkins suggests that convergence is not about technology, but about cultural forms. Explain what he means by this and provide one example of convergence culture “in-action.” Basically, I want you to tell a story of convergence. This blog post is due by Friday, March 16.

Clay Shirky’s Book

Because of this mix-up with the bookstore, I am changing the reading from required to recommended, and I’m asking you to write a blog entry about the Shirky book you read. The arguments of the two books are similar, and both are strong and filled with great examples. Please write a short description of the book and pull out a few key concepts. Successful blog posts will earn 10 additional points toward their paper grade.

Performance and Multiple Identities

How does Goffman’s theory of performance and everyday life shed light on online identity? Goffman wrote the book in 1959, clearly he was not referring to the Internet, but in what ways does he predict its use? Please respond by exploring an example of online performance and connect it directly to Goffman.
